 2012 NORTH WEST CAPE CONFERENCE
CALLING CURRENTS TO THE DREAMING
THE STORY GOES ON – THE TIDE IS TURNING

The “2011 W.A. State Coastal Conference”® under the auspices of the Western Australian Planning Commission  and W.A. Department of Planning is to be replaced by the Exmouth community-based “2012 NORTH WEST CAPE CONFERENCE – CALLING CURRENTS TO THE DREAMING” to be held in Exmouth 7 – 11 May 2012.

North West Cape Exmouth Aboriginal Corporation (NWCEAC) and the W.A. Planning Commission have mutually agreed that the original agreement covering the 2011 W.A. State Coastal Conference, originally to be held in October 2011, should, for a number of reasons, be concluded.

The North West Cape Exmouth Aboriginal Corporation wishes to thank the W.A. Planning Commission for their support and encouragement.

To understand the spirituality of one’s country, you need to know first the country that owns you; it is this feeling of belonging that will then take you to the next level of understanding that can only be experienced by someone who thinks themselves provided with all the necessities of life.

The understanding and insight gained towards the history and integrity of our region since the demise of our late custodian and traditional owner Sydney Dale, will continue to be shared and supported by all people that knew him and understood the importance of our future here on the country of his birth.

“Calling Currents to the Dreaming” will continue to happen on and around our Yinigudura* West Thalanyji Country here at North West Cape until time indefinite, nothing can change the power of the spirit when it is controlled by the unknown. It is this spirit that drives the heart and soul of us who have been taught and understand the necessity of making sure we always “do what the old people said” and for us here today our ancestors and teachers of the past will always be included for they are the holders of the stories of the country and the seas we call home.

The Story Goes On

The end of the Dreaming for the Yinigudura* West Thalanyji peoples history will always be at the lighthouse site commonly known as Vlamingh Head on North West Cape Exmouth.  From the Dreamtime until this day it will always be known as Padjarimanu, a mythical place that holds our Aboriginal Ancestors and peoples’ spiritual history and Dreamtime snake Kiljaru. At times in the moonlight one can see the moving currents in the waters off Padjarimanu; in a snake-like form, the currents move into the Gulf waters in the bay. The title also reflects the unique movement of the Ningaloo and Leeuwin currents in the area and also is symbolic of currents of change, dialogue and the flow of people including the many we hope that will join us here on country. It is a time to reflect and Support Partnerships on our lands that own us all – Mother Earth.

The coast of Western Australia is one of its most valuable natural assets. This coast is on the eastern side of the Indian Ocean. The region around the North West Cape Exmouth is home to terrestrial and marine national parks. The only continent in the world with coral reef on its west coast.
